Spec David Joseph Babineau
Birth: Aug. 7, 1980
Hampden County
Massachusetts, USA
Death: Jun. 16, 2006
Baghdad, Iraq

Army Spc Babineau was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky, as an infantryman. It is believed that three Humvees were manning a checkpoint by a Euphrates River canal south of Baghdad when they came under fire from many directions. Two Humvees went after the assailants, but the third was ambushed before it could move. Seven masked gunmen, including one carrying what was described as a heavy machine gun, killed Babineau who was the driver of the third vehicle, and then took the two other U.S. soldiers captive. The military said that soldiers at a nearby checkpoint heard small-arms fire and explosions during the attack at 7:15 p.m., and a quick-reaction force reached the scene within 15 minutes. The force found Babineau but no signs of the other two. The two soldiers bodies were found on a street near a power plant in the town of Youssifiyah, just south of Baghdad on June 19. As a senior at Springfield High School of Science and Technology in 1998, David wrote to his classmates he wanted to be a five-star general; he always talked about being in the service. He was also a pleasure to have in the classroom always focused, on time, and always got his assignments in. Before the summer was out, he had joined the Army and by December, he was assigned to Fort Campbell, Ky., home of the famed 101st Airborne Division. David leaves behind a wife, Rondi; two sons, ages 2 and 4; and a step-daughter, 8. This was his second tour of duty in Iraq and he had been scheduled to leave in May, but had his tour of duty extended.
