He enlisted in Co. G, 38TH IND INF on Sept. 18, 1861 along with his 1st cousin Joseph Aquila Ashbaugh. Less than three months into his army service, James was stricken ill by the onslaught of contagions and pathogens that plagued Camp Nevin, KY during the winter of 1861-62. He passed away from "remittent fever" in the regimental hospital on Dec. 3, 1861 under the supervision of Thirty-eighth Indiana Surgeon William A. Clapp. James's mother Cassandra applied for a federal pension on June 29, 1886 (app. #341,519; cert. #240,761 – Indiana).
