("The Red Cloud Chief" dated Oct. 3, 2001 on p. 6)
Audrey Marcille Strobl, the daughter of Charles and Hazel (Finney) Reeve, was born September 22, 1917 in Webster County, Neb. She departed this life on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001 at the Haven Home in Kenesaw, Neb., at the age of 84 years and four days.
Betty, as she was affectionately known by family and friends, grew up in the Eckley community. Her mother died from complications of the flu when she was one and a half years old. Her grandparents and an aunt helped to raise her as a young girl. She recalled her Grandfather Reeve running a telephone line from Cowles to their homestead in the Eckley community, where their switchboard was connected to the neighbors. Betty often helped operate the switchboard. She graduated from the Eckley Consolidated school in 1934. On January 31, 1935 she was united in marriage with Paul Strobl at Boone, Iowa. They farmed five miles north of Red Cloud and in 1942, moved to a farm on the north edge of town. In 1945, they moved into town to make their home. For a number of years, Betty was employed as a nurses' aid, working at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, then with the Webster County Hospital in Red Cloud.
Betty was a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church and was active for years with the United Methodist Women. As her children were growing up, she was involved with their activities in 4-H and volunteered her time as a leader. She and Paul loved to dance. In her leisure time she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidery, painting and baking. Her greatest love and enthusiasm in life was for her children and grandchildren, and she especially cherished the time they spent together.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her step-mother, Martha Krueger Reeve; her husband Paul on June 26, 1971; a daughter, Hazel Marie on June 3, 1936; and infant sons, Lonnie Paul on December 12, 1942 and Kelly Dean on September 12, 1948; and a sister, Lois Giger.
Left to treasure her memory are her children: Julee Ost, Kansas City, Mo.; Paula Strobl, Gladstone, Mo.; and Tim Strobl, Grand Island; two grandsons, Edward Mattison, Opp, Ala., and Todd Strobl, Grand Island; a sister, Leone Fleharty, Hastings; sister-in-law, Mabel Mitzelfelt and husband Ed, Red Cloud; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, 10:30 a.m. from the Simonson-Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Mike Lehr officiating. Vicki Lehr sang "How Great Thou Art," "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "In The Garden" with Barbara Sprague, organist. The casketbearers were Ed Mattison, Todd Strobl, LeMoyne Menze, Richard Ham and Gene Giger. Interment was in the Red Cloud Cemetery.
