Rose Elizabeth Haller, the daughter of Bohumil Frank and Elizabeth Pauline (Strobl) Sidlo, was born July 13, 1919 at Amboy. She departed this life on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at the Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud at the age of 86 years, six months and 12 days.
A lifelong resident of Webster County, Rose attended the Amboy school and in 1934, the famly moved to Red Cloud where she graduated with the Class of 1937. She was employed at the Red Cloud theatre, then as a secretary for attorney Bill Letson at the Webster County Courthouse. On April 23, 1942, she married Joseph William Haller at St. Anne's Church in Campbell. They lived at Bladen and later at Cowles. In 1950, the family moved to a farm near Guide Rock, where they resided until 1961, when they moved to a farm south of Red Cloud. In 1965, they purchased their home in Red Cloud. Being a housewife and raising five children was a job in itself. Rose sewed all of the clothes for her family, including coats. From 1967 to 1975 she worked at the Sprague Nursing Home, cleaning, doing some social work and crafts with the residents. She greatly enjoyed piecing quilts, which were given as gifts. Each year she would donate a quilt to the Sacred Heart Church as a raffle prize.
Rose was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society. She always had a large garden and enjoyed canning the produce, and raising chickens. Over the years she had accumulated a display of ornamental chickens, as well as a collection of Avon containers.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Joseph on July 7, 1980; a daughter Betty Borho on September 5, 2004; and three brothers, Vencil, Emil and Bohumil Sidlo, Jr.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Larry Haller of Essex, Iowa; Barbara Butcher and husband John of Avoca, Iowa; Roger Haller and wife Suzi of Yucaipa, Calif.; and Kenneth Haller and wife Pinsa (Noi) Boonkon, of Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. Also surviving are her son-in-law Leonard Borho of St. Meinrad, Ind.; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Wittwer of Hastings; brothers Albert Sidlo and wife Wanda of Hastings and Duaine Sidlo and wife Parthena of Red Cloud; other relatives and friends.
The Rosary was recited Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Church. Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, Jan. 30, 2006 at 10 a.m. from the Sacred Heart Church with Fr. Mel Rempe officiating. Casketbearers were Michael Haller, Shaun Haller, Jeffrey Haller, Ronald Ruhs, Joseph Haller* and Adam Haller*. Honorary casketbearers were Bernice McNeice, Mikey Cahill, Tiny Miner and Don Miner. Interment was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery at Red Cloud. The Williams Funeral Home of Red Cloud was in charge of arrangements.
