Entered service during the Civil War as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Heavy Artillery (112th Pennsylvania Volunteers). Commanded a section of the defensive forts around Washington, DC. Promoted to Brigadier General. He was mustered in on January 4, 1862, and mustered out on January 8, 1865.
