Erie Record, July 25, 1919: Zachary T. Heath, one of the early settlers of Neosho county, died at Lajunta, Colorado. Mr. Heath was a native of Park county, Indiana, born October 11, 1847, and later moved to Illinois. He left the farm in April 1864, and enlisted in Company E. 143d Illinois volunteer infantry, and did duty chiefly in Tennessee and Arkansas throughout the remainder of the war. He was discharged at Matoon, Illinois, and became a farm hand in that state till his departure for Kansas. He came to Osage Mission, now St. Paul, in 1867, with a horse and a mule and $25 as his earthly belongings and went to work as a hand on the farm. In time he took a claim near Galesburg and began a modest career as a farmer. He traded his horse and mule for a yoke of cattle. He worked around till he got together three yoke of cattle, and then went into the timber along the Neosho river and Osage creek and began "loggin." He followed this business four years, in the meantime giving his claim the attention required to hole it and for a time living a bachelor's life in his cabin home. May 7, 1871, he was united in Marriage with Rosa Remmy of Franklin county, Ohio, and took possession of his shanty claim which hey later sold and purchased a raw quarter section which is now occupied by Will Heath. The accumulations of their labors of years is represented in the ownership of seven hundred acres of land. Mr. Heath for several years was very successful in the stock business and each year turned off from five to eight hundred head of fat cattle. His wife passed away several years prior. Mr. Heath married Miss Sallie Oler July 15, 1906, and shortly after their marriage moved to Erie, moving to LaJunta in hopes of benefiting Mr. Heath's health. Mr. Heath's was a busy and intensely active life and his enviable record forms a bright spot upon the pages of Neosho county's history.
