Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was commissioned as Major of the 43rd New York Volunteer Infantry on September 20, 1861, and was mustered into the regiment's Field and Staff on October 1, 1861. He served in that duty through the first full year of the war, seeing action during the Spring 1862 Peninsular Campaign and the Seven Days Battles. After the regiment fought in the September 1862 Battle of Antietam, it's commander, Colonel Francis L. Vinton, was promoted to Brigadier General, and Benjamin F. Baker was promoted to Colonel to replace him. He then led his troops during the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign (where the unit lots 138 men at Salem Church), the July 1863 Gettysburg Campaign, and the Fall 1863 Mine Run Campaign. On February 1, 1864 he resigned his commission, and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services". (bio by: Russ Dodge)
