Thomas Ellison Dixon is the son of John E. Dixon and Elizabeth 'Betsey' Nowlin Dixon. He married Susanna Anthony in about 1849 in Cleveland County, North Carolina, and they had six children. According to family legend he enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army on November 21 1861, went to training camp where he became ill, and came home to die; leaving his widow with six young children. He apparently is an only child as no siblings have been found. The tombstone on this memorial has his date of birth as 1823, but according to the 1850 and 1860 census, he was born in 1828.(This part of Bio by Gene Jenkins)
"Spelled "Dickson" in the NC Troop Books which indicate he was a member of the "Cleveland Marksmen", Company I, the 38th Regiment:
'Born in Rutherford or Cleveland County and resided in Cleveland County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Cleveland County at age 22, November 21, 1861. Died at home in Cleveland County on April 8, 1862, of disease'."
A marker in this churchyard indicates Thomas E. Dixon was actually buried at Zion Baptist Church which is also in Cleveland County.(This part of Bio by Judith Parker-Proctor)
