Civil War Union Soldier. He enlisted as a Private in Company G, 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 28, 1862. He served through the Battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville, and was honorably mustered out when the regiment's terms of enlistment expired on June 27, 1863.
