He was enrolled in the 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 26, 1862, and was mustered in as Corporal of Company D on September 13, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863.
His first wife was Maria H. and his second wife was Lillie D. Emley.
Last Veteran Dead. William H. Asay, Asbury Park's last civil war veteran, died last week at the age of 88 years. He fought at Gettysburg and was wounded in the second battle of Fredericksburg. A widow and one daughter survive him.
