Birth: Jul. 9, 1809
Death: Apr. 8, 1864

Col. Vance moved to Mount Vernon in 1840. He was admitted to the bar in 1842 and rose rapidly in his profession and soon attained a high position as an advocate. He was elected Mayor of Mount Vernon in 1852. In August 1862, he was commissioned Colonel of the Ninety-sixth Ohio Volunteer infantry. He was in several battles before he fell, mortally wounded, in the battle of Sabine Cross roads on April 8, 1864. (Source: Mound View Cemetery Self-Guided Walking Tour doc.)
