Corporal, 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, based in Petawawa, Ontario. Aged 24, he was from Port Colborne, ON. He was deployed as a member of November Company, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group serving with NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He and MCpl Scott Vernelli were killed, and five others wounded, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their patrol in the Zhari District approximately 40 kilometres west of Kandahar City. Also, a local Afghan interpreter was killed and another injured. The incident happened about two hours before two soldiers died and three were injured by a roadside bomb in Shah Wali Kot District.

Cpl Crooks was described as very fit and athletic, an avid dirt-biker and a Texas hold 'em card shark. He played junior hockey before joining the military in 2005 and continued to enjoy playing on a team at the base. He was well regarded by his superiors who planned to put his name forward for officer training. Tyler, who died on his 24th birthday, is survived by parents Alfred and Karen, younger brother Tage, extended family, fiancée Kelly Maxwell and her family.

Funeral service held on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Port Colborne.

The deaths bring to 116 the number of Canadian military fatalities in the Afghanistan conflict since 2002. One diplomat and two aid workers have also died.
