A farmer early in life, at age 30 years he engaged in the Iron Trade. He married twice; first to Miss Jane Patterson, of Cumberland County, they had one daughter, Annie E. Hays, born 1821, she would also marry twice. Annie first married Lieut. Richard West, and married 2nd Lieut. Col. John W.T. Gardiner, who also preceded Annie in death. Annie died April 17, 1901 of diabetis in Brookline, Mass. at the age of 79 years 5 months and 23 datys, which gives her date of birth as October 25, 1821. She is buried in Maine.
John Hays married second to Mrs Eleanor B. Wheaton, the daughter of Robert Blaine, and granddaughter of Col. Ephraim Blain of Cumberland County, who was born in Ireland and came with his parents to Cumberland County in 1745. John and Eleanor were blessed with two sons and one daughter, they are:

John Milton Hays born February 1837, married August 8, 1865 to Miss Jane Van Ness Smead, she was born in New York City April 27, 1837, the daughter of Capt. R. C. and Sarah (Radeliffe) Smead. Five children were born to John Milton and Jane (Smead) Hays, they are;
Anna A.; Elizabeth S.; George M.; Raphael S.; and Eleanor B. Hays.
John and Eleanor (Wheaton) Hays were members of the Presbyterian Church, John died April 29, 1854 and Eleanor preceded him on January 9, 1839. His first wife Jane (Patterson) Hays died about the year 1822 or 1823.
