Services Held Tuesday for Pioneer Clay County Woman
Funeral services were held in the Baptist church on Tuesday afternoon for Mrs. O. W. Chaussee, 84, who passed away on Sunday at her home in Vermillion. The Rev. G. Thomas Fattaruso was in charge of the services.
Celia Dell Chaussee was born in Rockford, Ill. On Feb. 1, 1870, to Henry Clay and Elizabeth Cook Washburn. With her parents she came to South Dakota as a very small child. She received her elementary education in the little log schoolhouse at the foot of the ravine hill, which is historically known as the first school in Dakota Territory.
She was married to Oliver W. Chaussee on October 21, 1885, and they moved to a farm in Fairview township. There they resided until they moved to Vermillion. To Mr. and Mrs. Chaussee were born three daughters, Mrs. Lulu Walz, now ill in Dakota Hospital, Mrs. Myrtle Fowler, and Laura Chaussee who preceded her mother in death ten years ago. She was the grandmother of Mrs. Sigurd Anderson, wife of South Dakota's governor.
Mrs. Chaussee lived in the formative years of this state and she experienced and remembered well incidents recounted by historians. She participated actively, as long as health permitted in the affairs of the '76 club, and the Fairview Tea club. She was a charter member of the Women's Relief Corps and was a member of the First Baptist church in Vermillion.
Besides her daughters, Mrs. Walz and Mrs. Fowler, she is survived by a brother, Norman H. Washburn of Meckling; six grandchildren [Vivian, Dorothy, Glen, Robert C., Richard D. (Walzes) and Helen Fowler Rawlings], and thirteen great grandchildren [includes five Fowler children].
Interment was in the Bluff View Cemetery under the direction of the Frank M. Olds Funeral Service. The pass bearers were Frank Ufford, Fred Ufford, Albert Mockler, Martin Erickson, Peter Bruyer and William Lee.
