Born in Tuskegee, Alabama, James Harris was the son of Alabama and Della Wilson Harris. His other siblings were Hattie and Frank Harris.
He met Hattie Bryant daughter of Allen and Harriet Bryant. From this union five children were born: Nancy aka Loula, Cora Lee, Henry, James Jr and Lillie Bell.
He met Leona Martin and to this union their son Henry Harris was born.
He met Ethel Chapelle Pace and to this union a daughter, Bertha Harris was born.
James left Tuskegee in the late 1940's after an incident involving a white man. Due to the racial climate at the time, James was sent to Ohio by the local masonic lodge of which he was a member. In 1950, he left Ohio and met up with his children who were residing in Yardley, Pennsylvania.
