Melody Curry, 50, of Austin passed away April 26, 2013, at Southwood Care Center. A service is 2 p.m. May 1 at The Chapel at the Assumption Cemetery in Austin with Randy Curry officiating.

Melody Ann (Herridge) Curry was born Jan. 26, 1963, in Houston and adopted at an early age by William C. "Johnny" and Wynelle Herridge. The family lived in Houston until Melody was 9 and then moved to Marble Falls, where they raised horses and cows on a small plot of land. She graduated from high school in Marble Falls in 1981.

After high school, Melody got her cosmetology license and began practicing at various shops across the southside of Austin. She reconnected with a high school boyfriend, Richard Curry, while in Austin, and they were married in Temple on March 5, 1988.

Melody was diagnosed with Huntington's disease in 1998, and she continued to work at various places across south Austin until her condition prevented her from doing so. She fought her disease for many years and remained at home as long as possible before moving to Southwood Care Center in 2008.

Melody was a person who seemed quiet to those who didn't know her (and sometimes to those who did), but she opened up with those to whom she was close. She cared tremendously for her family and regularly visited Wynelle after a severe stroke left her incapacitated in a nursing home in 1992.

Melody deeply enjoyed music of many kinds; in particular, she was a fan of classic rock and metal and was a frequenter of concerts as they came through Austin. Melody inherited her father's sense of "picking on" people, but it was always out of love and in good fun. She reveled in having a good time and being with her close friends and family as often as possible.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to the Hospice Austin staff and the staff at Southwood Care Center for their wonderful care of Melody. The family requests that donations be made in honor of Melody to Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Road, Suite 100, Austin, TX 78759.

Arrangements by Piersall Benton Funeral Directors in Abilene. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.pbfuneraldirectors.com.
