Arnold Backes was born July 18, 1902 at Farming, Minnesota, the third child of John and Gertrude (Willenbring) Backes. His family moved in 1902 to the Foxholm, North Dakota area where he was raised with his five brothers and two sisters. He was confirmed at St. Henry's Catholic Church north of Foxholm, July 15, 1915. After attending the seminary he was ordained a priest May 26, 1932 at Foxholm.
His first assignment was as an assistant at St. Mary's Church in Bismarck. Then in June, 1934, he came to Powers Lake as pastor of St. James Catholic Church and also had charge of mission churches at Lostwood, McGregor and Wildrose. In 1936 he moved to Grenora and St. Boniface Catholic Church. Later he served at St. John the Baptist, Odense, and St. Philip, Hirschville. He died April 22, 1953 at St. Louis, Missouri.
When his mother died in 1937, Father Arnold said the mass for her funeral.
