Born Marija Urek in the lower portion of the Austro-Hungarian Dutchy of Styria, Village of Loč [in present day Slovenia]. She was the daughter of Joseph Spieler and Ana Urek.
After her mother came to the U.S.A., she lived with her grandparents, Janež and Ana Brinjaveč Urek, until she immigrated to join her mother and step-father (Joseph Krosel).
Mary worked for a time as a domestic servant in Pittsburgh.
Married shortly before the death of her mother, Mary had a long and loving marriage, resulting in three children. Deeply loved and respected by her half-siblings, with the early death of their mother, "Aunt Mary" became the matriarch and eventually the surrogate grandmother to her nephews and nieces.
