LaMar D. Booker, 92, passed from this life surrounded by loving family on Monday, March 14, 2011, at the Iowa Veteran's Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. LaMar was born on February 27, 1919, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Lonnie and Elizabeth (Lamb) Booker. Those that came to know and love him called him "Dad" or "Chief".

LaMar grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and was educated in the Des Moines Public School system attending Phillips, Woodrow Wilson Jr. High and graduating from East High School in 1937.

LaMar enlisted in the Army in 1941 and served his country for four and one half years ranking as a 1st Sergeant upon his honorable discharge in 1945. He was a pistol and carbine sharpshooter, he received a Motor Vehicle Driver Award, a Good Conduct Medal and an American Defense Service Ribbon. His occupational specialty was overseeing the maintenance of military vehicles. He performed one tour of duty in New Guinea. He received specialized training in radio electronics at Hampton Institute in Hampton, VA in 1941.

After his military career LaMar married Elaine Francis O'Bright and from their union six children were born; Corliss, April, Teresa, Kathryn, Denice and LaMar Jr. LaMar loved to ride motorcycles, go bowling, shoot pool, watch sports on TV, discuss current events and spend time with his family. He was also fond of all the dogs that were part of his family throughout the years; especially Casino, Buster and Hector.

LaMar was employed at Solar Aircraft as a welding inspector for 13 years and Martin Marietta as a self employed truck driver for 33 years where he retired in 1993.

LaMar is survived by his children, Corliss DeVan and Teresa Booker of Des Moines; Kathyn Blankinship of Glendale, Arizona; Denice Robinson of Des Moines; LaMar Jr. (Anita) of Mesquite, Texas; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; sister, Marjorie Angelo (Leo); brother, James Booker (Heather) and a host of other family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; daughter April Jones; parents; three siblings, Hobie Booker, Tommy Booker and Ralph Booker; son-in-law, James Robinson Sr.; grandson, Angelo Palmer.

The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to the staff at the Iowa Veteran's Home where LaMar was cared for like family during the last 18 months.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 18, 2011, at the Iowa Veteran's Home, 1301 Summit St., Marshalltown, Iowa (641-752-1501).
