Mel was a graduate of East High School. He worked his entire career in the field of mechanical contracting, moving to Iowa City in 1968 to become President and owner of R.M. Boggs Co., Mechanical Contrators. He worked there until retirement at age 77.

He was a B24 pilot in the 8th Airforce during World War II, and trained as an air rescue pilot during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of 70 yearsAileen Frazier Boggs and son Steve (Fran) of West Des Moines, five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and cherished son-in-law Doug (Paula) Hemer and niece Dianne (Gary) Glanzer.
