Birth: Oct. 11, 1841
Jackson County
Alabama, USA
Death: Nov. 27, 1912
Jackson County
Alabama, USA

My great-great grandfather:

John Bishop was born to Stephen Bishop, (Sr.) and Louvisa Bishop.

He first married Eliza Jane (Bean) October 5, 1864 by S.G. Gummett, Justice of the Peace.
Their children: Wade Hampton, James Stephen, Henry Jones, Sallie Ann, Margaret T., Eliza Cleveland, and Lulu

After Eliza Jane (Bean) died, he married Nancy Angeline Swearengin in 1887. Their children: Dora E., Dock, Mary "Mollie", Amanda Ellen, Benjamin Bryan, Charlie Geobel, Florence, and John, Jr.

Enlisted in the CSA Army 6 Aug 1861 at Scottsboro, AL for 12 months. He mustered in as a Private at Camp Sneed, Knoxville, TN in Churchwell's 4/34 TN Infantry Regiment, Griffins Co. D. On 16 April 1862, he was elected to 2nd Lt. He fought in the large battles of Murfreesboro, TN, Chickmauga Battle, and Missionary Ridge. A remark on his record says, "Bounty Due". Initially he received $160.00/mo. later reduced to $80.00 of Confederate money.

After the war, he served as 1st Lieutenant in the Jackson Co., Alabama Home Guard composed of 167 men mostly from Paint Rock Valley, AL. Taken from Jackson Co., Deed book 4, page 50-53.

Information from his great granddaughter, Rejeana: John served in the Civil War from 1861 until 1864; It was reported in the Scottsboro Fellow Citizen, June 1897, that John had purchased a new uniform and would attend the Centennial on Veteran's Day in Nashville, TN. John owned a grocery store and had a nice horse and buggy. When he was 72, he was robbed and beaten on the way home one night and ended up getting pneumonia and dying. He lived all his life on the Bishop homestead.

How very sad it is that a man can survive a major war only to die at age 72 as a result of being robbed and beaten at home. God bless the families of this Brave soldier, John Bishop!
