Brutus was a Schnauzer-Poodle mix born to a litter of puppies owned by the sister of a lady who worked for our mother. It was apparent that Brutus was the smallest of the litter and wasn't growing at the rate of his brothers and sisters. They only wanted big dogs, so they asked if we would adopt him. We called him "Brutus" to give him a strong name.
We had an older poodle who went blind; he and Brutus became great friends. Brutus functioned as a "seeing-eye dog" for Pepe, often barking to guide him when he became confused.
Pepe wasn't a "lap dog", so we encouraged Brutus to sit on our laps to be petted. Though Brutus grew to only 14 inches high, he was a stocky, barrel-chested dog, eventually weighing 35 pounds. That didn't stop him from wanting to be on people's laps; we enjoyed it despite the sore thighs of the people involved.
Brutus was fearless; he never knew a day of being unloved or being afraid. He was a clever "escape artist" and an incorrigible soul. He was summarily expelled from two obedience schools for insubordination.
He enjoyed his food, particularly pasta and anything that was dropped on the floor. His nickname was "puppy", and he believed he was a puppy every day of his 16 1/2 years. He suffered several small strokes in his final year, and was ultimately euthanized at his veternarian's office. He was so mourned by our family, that it was 6 years before we could adopt another dog. He is remembered and missed by all.
Thank you very much to Miss Renee for her kind sponsorship of Brutus' page. We so much appreciate her kind friendship and thoughtfulness.
