From The Bryan Times ~ Paul B. Elder -
Bryan is fortunate in having a number of industries, not brought to the city by inducements, but which came from the individual enterprise of a local resident.
The beginning of course was small; and for years it was a question of whether the business would ever really succeed,
or whether it had ever been worth starting. Then it began to grow, expanding repeatedly, and eventually becoming a large business with representatives in all parts of the country and perhaps even abroad.
That was the experience of Paul B. Elder, founder of the pharmaceutical company bearing his name. For years Paul sold drugs and then a little more than 40 years ago he opened a small drug manufacturing business on the west side of the square, associated with Wilbur Snyder. The business grew slowly. Later, he became the sole owner, and then purchased a building at the present location on East Mulberry.
New equipment was installed and then the building was enlarged until now the Company sells drugs all over the United States and some abroad. For many years the chief sales were in the midwest.
For years Mr. Elder had not been in good health and the operation of the business was in the hands of of his son, Tom, but in that time he took a continued interest in the affairs of the Company, and saw it continue to grow.
It always seems unfortunate that so many people reach the age when they might enjoy life, and then find that period all too short.
Mr. Elder did, after all, live longer than average; he had more success than most people , and while he had not been able to enjoy life much recently, he was fortunate in not having to endure the suffering that many are forced to stand.
Paul Billau Elder had contributed much to Bryan, not only with the founding of the business, but in the social life of the city. He will be greatly missed.
