Delbert was the son of Charles McClellan Kay & Rosa Florence (Herdman) Postelwait Kay. Delbert was born in Rockcastle, Jackson County, W.Va. Delbert's mother was born Rosa Florence Herdman. The parents of Rosa Herdman was James Madison (Poke) Herdman and Catherine Starcher. Rosa may have been adopted later by her stepfather Albert Gallatin Postelwait. This would seem to explain why her marriage record list her as Rosa Postelwait.
