Wife of Isaac Henry Van Hook. Daughter of John M. Whisenand and Emily Grimes

Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, November 30, 1944

Nancy Catherine Van Hook, daughter of John M. and Emily Whisenand, was born in Smithville, Ind., Oct. 21, 1853, and died Nov. 27, 1944, at the home of her daughter in Chariton, at the age of 91 years, 1 month and 6 days.

She was married to I. H. Van Hook January 11, 1873. Four children were born to this union, two in Smithville, Ind., and two in Chariton, Ia.

In 1886 they moved to Goodland, Kans. where they were pioneers until 1900 when they went to Harvard, Nebr., and remained until 1909 when they returned to Chariton to care for her aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Whisenand.

Those preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, one daughter, Mrs. J. S. Warren, of Monte Vista, Colorado, one son, C. M. Van Hook, of Center, Colorado, and one brother, J. D. Whisenand, of Des Moines.

Those who mourn her loss are one daughter, Mrs. Alice Fell, of Chariton; one son, J. W. Van Hook, of Berryville, Ark., two brothers, J. S. Whisenand, Harvard, Nebr., and T. I. Whisenand, of Smithfield, Texas; 12 grandchildren, one of whom, Leola Fern Van Hook, assisted in her care for almost 8 years; 23 great grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren and other loving relatives and friends.

She was converted in early womanhood and was a faithful member of the Methodist church for many years. Since coming to Chariton she became a member of the Church of the Nazarene and was a constant attendant as long as health permitted. For the past 8 years she has been an invalid confined to her bed.

The Bible, radio, and her daughter, Alice, who has cared for her since 1924, and granddaughter, Leola Fern, were here constant companions. The cheerful visits and daily ministrations of relatives and friends made bright the remaining years.

The funeral was held at the Fred Dunshee funeral home, Nov. 29, at 2:30 p.m. The services were conducted by the Rev. A. E. Beals with the Rev. Virgil Swanson assisting. Burial was in the Chariton cemetery.
