MRS. JOHN W. MAUK

Mrs. John W. Mauk, of Whitebreast township, one of the pioneer residents of this county, passed away at her home on Thursday afternoon, April 11, 1912, at 3:30 o'clock, after and extended illness with paralysis.

Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. W. Gl. Hohanshelt, pastor of the M. E. church, were held at the family residence on Saturday forenoon at ten o'clock, after which interment took place in the Chariton cemetery.

Alice A. Whisenand was born in Monroe county, Indiana, on June 25, 1845. She moved to Iowa in the early fifties and on December 25, 1862, was united in marriage at this place to John W. Mauk, who survives her.

To them eight children were born, six of whom are living. They are Mrs. Jennie James, of this city; Miss Eva Mauk, of Ottumwa; Mrs. Stella Mauk, of Tabor; Will and Theodore, of this place; and Fred, of Omaha.

All were present at the last sad rites last Saturday. One daughter, Ada, died in 1893 at the age of eight years. A son, John was a volunteer in the 1st Colorado Infantry during the war with Spain, and died on Oct. 22, 1899, while on his way home from the Philippine Islands.

During her residence in the county of over half a century, she won the regard of all with whom she came in contact. She was a woman of culture and refinement, blessed with a happy disposition which characterized her long life and which won for her many friends.

Her death is greatly deplored and the sorrowing husband and children will have the sympathy of the entire community.
