Fifth of eleven children and third of five sons born to Eli Atwood and Joanna Adams Holmes Atwood Stevens Perkins.
Grandson of Elijah Atwood and Lydia Griffith, Ebenezer Holmes and Jerusha Selee.
Husband of Susan Maria Hamblin, the daughter of Simeon Hamblin and Thankful Turner. They were married 10 Feb 1867 in Osterville, Barnstable County and had the following children:

* Harriet Ames Atwood, Mrs Ephraim Stringer 1871-1953

Before enlisting John was a farmer.

John enlisted to the military 16 April 1861 at Middleboro when he was 18 years old, and mustered out 23 Apr 1861 with Company K, 3rd infantry, and was ranked a Corporal. He mustered out 22 July 1861 in Boston.
His second enlistment was 14 Jan 1862 from Massachusetts, Unit 909, Company C 18th infantry, mustered out 07 Oct 1863 in Boston.
His military records state, "Rank Change (2nd enlistment) 03 Sep 1861, rank change Brigadier General, declined commission."

John's obituary appeared in the Boston Globe dated 28 April 1930, p20c1
JOHN S. ATWOOD, 87, DIES IN MIDDELBORO
Middleboro, April 28 - John S. Atwood of Wareham st, one of the last survivors of Co K, 3d Regiment, died yesterday in his home, aged 87 years.
He had a remarkable was record and was one of those who went in the gunboat Pawnee to destroy the Norfolk Navy Yard at Norfolk, Va, early in the Civil War.
He was the man selected to light the fuse for the explosion. He lighted it, but it went out, ad the attempt failed. Several brothers died in the war.
He was a well known fox hunter.
