"The Humane Society of the United States is proud to receive a 2011 People's Choice Telly Award for the video "Stallone: The Face of Dogfighting." This video recounts the heart-wrenching story of a dog suffering from a lifetime of physical and mental abuse, forced to fight and clinging to life. Following a massive dogfighting bust, Stallone was taken to a temporary shelter, where he displayed a love and gratitude unimaginable to the team fighting desperately to save his life. The video was awarded a Silver Telly, the highest honor given at these awards.
In 2009, Frank Loftus, senior video producer for The HSUS, followed The HSUS Animal Rescue Team as they assisted federal, state and local authorities in the unprecedented rescue of hundreds of dogs from multiple organized dogfighting operations. Of the many hundreds of dogs rescued, Stallone's was one that left a powerful impact on the entire rescue team and Loftus meaningfully reveals his story for all to see in this award-winning video.
Stallone, a six-year old pit bull, is the face of dog fighting. On the day he was rescued, his entire head was a mangled mass of swollen, gaping, infected wounds – eyes, ears, muzzle, lips, nose, chin, neck, legs – no part was left unscathed. Some of the puncture wounds penetrated to the bone. He had been forced to fight recently and often.
Stallone did not choose to live the life of a fighting dog – when not desperately defending his life, he was housed alone in a filthy kennel with a mud floor, not able to even lick many of his untreated injuries. Stallone was very underweight and in extreme pain.
"We wanted to tell Stallone's heart-breaking story of neglect and cruelty while also showing that his final moments were full of love," said Chris Schindler, manager of animal fighting investigations for The HSUS. "This Telly award is a great tribute to Stallone's life and the work we are doing at The Humane Society of the United States to end dogfighting nationwide."
In addition to receiving a 2011 Telly Award, this video also played a key role in The HSUS winning the Pepsi Refresh Challenge grand prize of $250,000. The video was featured on the challenge's website and money from this award has already been used in three rescue operations, including a large hoarding case in Alabama. Thanks to Stallone and the award money from this video, the rescue team has saved 2,397 animals so far in 2011."
