First Sgt. Chester C. Hill
Served in Co. G 4th Missouri Cavalry during the War of Southern Independence of 1861-65 (AKA The Civil War)
He was a Local farmer near Green City MO. when the war broke out, He enlisted in May of 1861 at age 40 (He was nick named the old man by the boys in his Company) He was quickly Made Sgt. then later First Sgt. He was wounded twice but he stayed with his Regiment until the end in April 1865. With the War behind him he went back to His Wife and 3 kids and his farm and led a rather uneventfull life until his wife Winnie (Holden) Hill died in 1903 She is buried in the Higginsville City Cemetery. He tried to run the farm in his later years but this proved to much for the old Soldier and in Dec. of 1904 he was admitted to the Confederate Veterans Home in Higginsville MO. He died their Peacefully in his sleep of old age on Oct. 15th 1913 at age 92 The Attached photo of Chester & The one of his wife Winnie were taken in the 1890s and are courtesy of The Hill Family in Green City MO. The Photos of his grave and the cemetery were taken in Sept. 2001
