|Death: ||Aug., 1906|
Sad beyond words and almost beyond belief, was the announcement on last Tuesday of the death in California, of Mrs. Convere Jones Bryant. How can we associate death with that fine, indomitable spirit!
No more gifted young woman ever grew up in this community than she, who was known among us as Miss Connie Jones. Nature was indeed lavish with her. Poseessed of a rare, patrician beauty, which bespoke her aristocratic birth, a brilliant mind, an unusual grace of manner and charm in conversation - these qualities so distinct that it will never pass from the minds of those who knew her. Cultivated, beautiful, brilliant, her charm was unfailing.
None really knew her, though - the true spirit of her, except those who were very near to her. This while true of all, was especially true of her. Not all knowing her only as a gifted and charming woman might have guessed the measure in which she possessed the simple heart virtures, the qualities that made her the idol of her home as daughter, and sister and wife. Devoted, unselfish, her intense nature was ever ready to prove itself in acts of helfulness and generosity, in cheerfulness and self-forgetfulness.
The death of her husband, only three weeks ago followed so closely by her own, both in a distant State, makes the closing of her life infinitely sad, and when her body is brought home to be buried here, where she grew to young womanhood, there are so many who, with heavy hearts and loving hands, would place immortelles upon her grave.
"We know, O Lord, as little what is best;
Wingless, we move so lowly'
But in Thy calm all-knowledge let us rest -
Oh, holy, holy, holy!"
