Mr. Al Smith, 78, of Macon, Ga., died Sunday at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday at Vineville Baptist Church with burial in Macon Memorial Park. Dr. William Hardee, Mr. David Westmoreland and Mr. Jim Gibbs, PSP will officiate. The family will meet friends from 5 - 7 p.m. Tuesday at Snow's Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street and may be contacted at the residence. They suggest that memorial contributions be made to Vineville Baptist Church, 2591 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204 or to Elks Aidmore Children's Center, 2394 Morrison Road, Conyers, GA 30012. Mr. Smith, son of the late Floyd Appling Smith and Natalie Long Smith, was born in Bluffton, SC. He was a graduate of Furman High School, a 1951 graduate of the University of Georgia earning a BS Degree in Forestry. A U. S. Navy veteran, Mr. Smith had lived in Macon since 1970 and was retired as Chief of Forestry Administration with the State of Georgia. He was a member of Vineville Baptist Church where, for twenty-two years, he served as the chairman of the Money Counting Committee. He was also a deacon, a former Sunday School teacher, former chairman of the Buildings and Property Committee and a member of the Signet Sunday School Class for thirty-seven years. Mr. Smith was a member of the Loyal Order of Elks for forty-four years and was a past president of the Georgia Elks Association. He was elected president while a member of the Newnan Elks Lodge 1220, then later moved to the Warner Robins Elks Lodge 2178. He also served as Ritual Chairman, Convention Chairman, Budget Chairman and Resolutions Chairman. Mr. Smith was also a member of the American Legion Post 3. Survivors include his wife, June C. Smith of Macon; his son, Daniel Allen Smith of Denver, CO; his daughters, Jodie S. (Ken) Carswell of Dublin, Julie S. Brantley and Polly S. (Ray) Ellington of Macon; his sister, Mary S. Jackson of Warner Robins; twelve grandchildren, David Smith, Jessica (Jacob) Schaefer and Bobby Smith of Tacoma, WA, Michael Smith of Denver, CO, Bryan Hutto of Milledgeville, Zachary Hutto and McKenzie Carswell of Dublin, Josh Brantley, Ben Brantley, Austin Brantley of Macon, Erin (Patrick) Barber of Valdosta and Blake Ellington of Macon; six great grandchildren; a niece and two nephews.
