Henry Baker was born March 23, 1815 in Hessie Darmstadt, Germany. He emigrated to the United States by having himself tied in a potato sack and put on a ship; then, once at sea, he sold food and washed dishes enroute. He stayed at first with a wealthy uncle in Philadelphia; then he came to Guilford, Ohio. He married Hanna Hartje, who was born February 21, 1822, a daughter of Lorenze and Melinda Herbst Hartje. After the completion of the Sandy Beaver Canal, the Hartje family, with the exception of Hanna Hartje Baker, moved to Western Ohio. Later, Hanna's sister, Mary Ann, who married Henry Israel and was to become the mother of Fred, Homer, and Charles Israel, returned to the Guilford area. It is known that Hanna and Mary Ann had a brother named August.
Henry and Hanna Baker lived in a log cabin in a wooded area on the east side of Depot Road, just north of Sell Road, about one mile north of the intersection of present Route 172 and Depot Road, east of Guilford in Center Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. Henry and Hanna had four sons and eight daughters in the years spanning 1841 through 1866. Hanna Hartje Baker died October 31, 1883; and Henry Baker died January 24, 1892. Their graves are located near the center of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Cemetery, situated on the north side of Route 172 about one mile east of the Depot Road intersection, and are marked with a unique stone with the top shaped like a diamond. In the same cemetery are markers for their son, Daniel, and his wife Harriet, and daughter, Carrie. There are also markers for their son August and his wife Mary.
