Cortland was very interested in genealogy and history. He was active in the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania.
He had done much work on the Elkin family
while on a trip to Omagh, Tyrone, Ireland shortly after the turn of the 20th century.

Interned at Allegheny Hospital in 1913-14;
Assisted in the lab at Allegheny Hospital in 1914-15;
Served as a lieutenant and Captain in the Army in the U. S. and France in 1917-19,
Was on the staff at Allegheny General Hospital from 1919 through 1930. He was an internal surgeon and also held the positionas chief of staff.
