Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He was mustered in as a Private in Company G, 5th New York Volunteer Cavalry on August 22, 1861. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery in action on August 25, 1862 at Waterloo Bridge, Virginia. His citation reads "Voluntarily assisted in the burning and destruction of the bridge under heavy fire from the enemy." Promoted to Corporal, and eventually to Quartermaster Sergeant, he served the full length of the war, and was honorably mustered out on July 19, 1865 at Winchester, Virginia. His Medal was awarded to him on June 11, 1895. (bio by: Don Morfe)
