Son of Lynda Evans & Unknown father. He was raised by his maternal grandparents in Greeneville, SC.
E.Thomas told his family that Confederate Renegades had killed his family while he hid in SC. He made his way to Knoxville to join the Union.
May 18, 1864: Enlisted in Union Army Mich 10th Volunteer Cavalry Co B. in Knox County, TN. Residence given at enlistment is Transylvannia, NC.
Among the battles he rode in was the 3rd & last battle for Saltville, VA, which the Union won.
An Edward Thomas Evans married a Martha E. Swanger in Knox County TN 14 May 1865. We aren't sure if this is our E.Thomas or not. If so, Martha died or the marriage was dissolved.
Discharged 22 Aug 1865 Sweetwater, TN.
He married Barbara Baughard Trobaugh 17 Oct 1866 in Greene County, TN: She had 3 children prior by her 1st husband Henry Trobaugh:

E. Thomas left this family in Cosby, Cocke County, TN around 1877 to sell a wagon load of chestnuts in Knoxville. (chestnuts probably covered moonshine.)
Per application for Civil War Pension, he lived in Lee County, VA 1877.
He was convicted in Abingdon VA Federal Court & sent to Albany NY Federal Prison in 1879 for making moonshine, & never returned to this family in Cocke County TN. He's in Albany Federal Prison in 1880 census. He served 11 months of his 1 yr sentence there.
Wife Barbara B.T. Evans died around 1885 & their 3 daughters Margaret, Vina, & Minnie died before 1895. (Unknown causes & graves have not been found.)
He married 2nd wife Rosa Bell Gibson (from VA) 30 yrs younger than E.Thomas, in 1893 in Hancock County, TN. They had at least 8 children:

1900-1910 he delivered mail on horesback & lived in Hancock County.
1920: Age 73, E.Thomas is a Weaver in the cotton mill in Spartanburg, SC. His 19 yr old son Robert is also a Weaver. Daughters working as Spinners are 15 yr old Velva, 17 yr old Viola, and 21 yr old Ellie. A 16 yr old boarder in his home, Maude Lane, is also a Spinner
Oct 1927: He stayed 3 mos in Veterans Hospital Johnson City, TN at age 80, Oct 12, 1927 to Jan 19, 1928.
He died over 3 years later at age 83 years & 10 months.
