David Gish(1743-May 1796), father of David born 1772, bought land in Virginia in 1776 according to Augusta Co, Land Records. David Gish, son of Mathias and Kathrina Gish is the only David Gish old enough to have bought land in Roanoke Viginia(then Augusta Co)in 1776.

David Gish, Sr. (1772-1849)
He was born on lands near what is known today as Vinton, a small town adjoining Roanoke. He first married Mary Small and had 4 children. When Mary died he married Mary Elizabeth (Polly) Wright. They had 3 children. David and his sons built a grist mill on Glade Creek and for much of the 19th century the area was known as "Gish's Mill" or simply "Gish's".The town name Vinton was not adopted until 1884. The youngest son of David and Polly carries on the line.
