NOTE:THIS PERSON'S NAME IS ROBERT BURNS DEMAR. HE IS SHOWN ON OTHER SITES AS ROBERT BERNARD (NICKNAME BURNS) WHICH IS IN ERROR. HIS FATHER'S NAME IS ALSO IN ERROR ON THE SAME SITE. HIS FATHER WAS JOHN WILLIAM VINTON DEMAR AS IT APPEARS IN CHURCH RECORDS.

He was baptised 19 May 1877 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Prince George's County, Maryland. He was named for a family friend, Robert Burns. The baptism was located in microfilm records for the church.

He joined the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S. Battleship, Indiana in the Spanish American War. He later served on the U.S.S. Richmond, Vermont, Monongahela, Franklin, Atlanta and Essex. After his discharge, he worked at the Navy Yard in Washington, D. C. as a Boss-Rigger.

As a musician, he played in local bands. He also participated in sports and was well known for his participation in boxing matches, fighting under the name, "Burns" Demar. He married Marie "Mamie" Anna Beckert on, August 16, 1901 in Alexandria, Virginia They had one son, Robert Burns Demar, Jr. (another son died as an infant. Marie later married Frederick E. Wheeler.

"Dead Man's Curve", the dangerous turn on the Washington Baltimore Hwy., has taken another life. Burns Demar, 40 years old, of 803 I St., S.E. a boss rigger of the Navy Yard here is dead, and 3 others are injured as the result of the overturning on an automobile, Washington bound at an early hour yesterday morning..........omitted.....Demar was a well known athlete and is survived by his wife and a 15 year old son.
