Mr. Homer Edgeworth, age 102, died Monday, September 14, 2009, in Ridgeland, MS.
Services will be on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street with burial to follow at Lakewood Memorial. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2009, at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street.
Mr. Edgeworth was born in Shannon, MS on January 4, 1907 and graduated from the Tupelo Military Institute. He led an interesting life that took him down many different paths.
About three weeks ago he gave an interview to Ace Atkins, the Pulitzer Nominee writer/novelis, on the historic 1932 Bank Robbery in Tupelo, MS. Mr. Edgeworth worked at the bank as the head teller and was held at gun point during the robbery by Machine Gun Kelly. When Machine Gun Kelly was apprehended in Oklahoma, Mr. Edgeworth was taken there to identify him. Mr. Edgeworth was the last living person known to be able to tell the story.
He worked with the State Fire Marshall's office, serving as the Deputy State Fire Marshall. He was an arson investigator.
In the 1950s, Mr. Edgeworth served as a Judge in Hinds County and the later on the Probation and Parole Board. He was also involved with the Security Commission. He retired as the Election Commissioner of the 5th District in Hinds County.
Mr. Edgeworth had been a member of Leavell Woods United Methodist Church since 1949 and was a lifelong member of the Exchange Club. He proudly received his 50 year pin from the Masons Forest Hill Lodge #615. He was also a member of the Shriners.
Survivors include his daughter, Cecilia Baker of Ridgeland, MS; a son, Richard Gene Edgeworth and his wife, Carol of Marietta, GA; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and also numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Wiley and Ida Jackson Edgeworth; his wife, Onia Garves Edgeworth; a brother, Clarence Edgeworth; three sisters, Esther Griffin, Ala Moore and Jessie Gober.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.
