A Most Beautiful Love...
This Memorial is being added with the efforts of Tom "Homer" Williams , who is a member here at Find a Grave. He introduced me to what he and I both believe may be one of the greatest love stories, never told.
I have been scouring around trying to find whatever information I could on this couple, as a special gift to Tom, who wanted to see Ben and Stella remembered here.
And this is what I have been able to uncover so far:
I found Ben as a small child living in Cincinnati Ohio, on the 1880 Census. He was living with his Father Bernard, his Mother Elizabeth and the siblings in order of their birth: August, Paulina, Maria, Johanna, Josephine, Bernard and John. All were born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in 1876.
Then in the 1900 Census, Estelle, Ben's wife, is single at this time of her life and she is living with her Father, Jacob Fox and her Mother Elizabeth, along with a younger sibling, a sister by the name of Amelia P. They were found living in Union County, Indiana. All members of this family were born in Ohio, except Amelia. She was born in Indiana and both sets of Grandparents were born in Germany.
In the same 1900 Census, Ben is still living in Cincinnati Ohio, with his sister Maria M. Ostenkamp and his youngest brother John F.
Ben lists his occupation as a Monument Cutter, which explains where the unique beauty of their headstone was born. He lived it with his heart and he made it with his own hands.
In the 1910 Census, Stella and Ben have been married for 2 years now and they are living in Hamilton County, Cincinnati Ohio. It states that Stella was born in November, 1874.
Stella's Mother Elizabeth is also living with them and it shows that Amelia who is Stella's younger sister, has passed away.
For some reason I cannot find Ben and Stella in the 1920 or 1930 Census. ***See NOTE below***
And the only other additional information I was able to find is from a WWI Draft Registration Card that was filled out on September 12, 1917. It lists Bernard John Ostenkamp, as having a small build, short height, brown hair and green eyes. It also has Estelle Gertrude Ostenkamp as his wife...
Their one of a kind headstone tells the story of a true love, that seemingly can only be found now by the words that are left engraved.
On Stella's side he writes:
-Stella- Beloved Wife And Pal.
True to me, kind to me, never deceiving...
Cheering me, helping me, ever believing...
Sad for me, glad for me, never apart...
Dear to me, near to me, Pal of my Heart.
-1933
Then on Ben's side she writes:
-Ben- To whom you were always...
Clean-hearted, warm hearted, all the way thru...
Uplifting and tender most wonderful you...
Fair to me, square to me, life's dearest part...
Best to me, blest to me, Pal of my Heart.

The Credo which is found in the center, reads:
If God exists and I believe He must, Shall I not find Him in the silence white of time worn stars, attremble through the night and in the lowly things of earth and dust?
If God exists and dare I say Him nay?
Will He not speak through every common hour A syllable of beauty and of power, And fill with haunting echoes every day?
Yes God exists- oh blessed faith and true I've found Him in the radiant soul of you.
Stella's date of death is: March 8, 1933.

She was also able to find Ben and Stella in the 1920 and 1930 Census.
In the 1920 Census their last name was written down as John????
And from what we have gathered it appears there were never any children from this union, so their love remained between themselves.
