SYLAS EMIL "SY" KARAU
Sylas Emil "SY" Karau, 77, of 2009 Lake Street, Merrill. died Sunday, March 27, 1994 at Good Samaritan Health Center, Merrill. Sylas was born December 2, 1916 in Merrill to the late Herman and Bertha Buck Karau. He married Hildegarde Yunkherr in Merrill on July 4, 1943.
Sy worked the last 11 years as a rural paper carrier for the Wausau Daily Herald, starting in 1983. Prior to that, he owned the Midget Bar from 1945 to 1948, then purchased the River Street Tavern. From 1960 to 1962 he owned and operated Sy's Beer Bar, and from 1968 to 1979, owned and operated Sy's Service Station. Sy was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He also enjoyed fishing.
Sylas is survived by his wife, Hildegarde, a son, Thomas Karau, a daughter, Cindy (Alan) Vandre, and a sister, Lauretta Wengler, all of Merrill. He is further survived by three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, March 29, 1994 at St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill, the Reverend Alden Beversdorf officiated. Entombment was in Merrill Memorial Park. The Schram-Waid Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
