Pony Express rider. His route was along the Platte River in Nebraska from Fort Kearney to Cottonwood Springs, a distance of about 100 miles. He often had to swim swollen streams on horseback in order to deliver the mail on time. The Paiute Indians were hostile during that period and one time he arrived at a station and found it burned to the ground, the station keeper dead, and the horses missing. But he continued with the horse he had ridden and delivered the mail to the next station on time. Richard Cleve worked for the freighting company for several years after the Pony Express was terminated.
