Birth: May 10, 1895
Death: May 2, 2010
Okinawa, Japan

A Japanese woman believed to be the oldest person in the world has died just days before her 115th birthday.

Kama Chinen died Sunday on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa, where she'd been living in a care home for the past few years. A spokesman today announced her death, as reported by several Japanese and international news agencies.

Chinen was reportedly born on May 10, 1895, and her life span touched three centuries. She became the world's oldest known person when 115-year-old Gertrude Baines died in a Los Angeles hospital last September.

Okinawa has one of the highest life expectancies in the world, and the island has been the focus of several longevity studies. Its inhabitants mostly eat a diet of fresh fish, miso soup, local vegetables, rice and green tea. Research shows a record number of long-living elderly people there maintain a combination of healthy diets, exercise and self-sufficiency.
