James was killed at the Battle of the Phillippines, a campaign to defeat and expel the Japanese forces that occupied the Phillippines. The Japanese Army had overrun all of the Phillippines during the first half of 1942. The Liberation of the Phillippines commenced with amphibious landings on the eastern Phillippine island of Leyte on October 20, 1944, the death listed for James P. Andersen. on the 20t, the U.S. Sixth Army, supported by naval air bombardment, landed on the eastern shore of Leyte, one of the islands of Visayas island group, northeast of Mindanao. The Japanese attempted to distroy the landing which brought about the sequence of battles known as the Battle of Leyte Gulf, that was fought through October 26th.
