Birth: Dec. 3, 1909
Los Angeles County
California, USA
Death: Oct. 25, 1944, China

Chief Torpedoman's Mate and also "Chief of the Boat" aboard the famous submarine, USS Tang.
On the night of October 24, 1944 the USS Tang attacked a convoy and was going to fire her last (24th) torpedo at a crippled Japanese merchant ship before heading for home. The torpedo went erratic and it made a circular run striking the Tang in the stern. Out of 87 Tang crew members only 9 men survived the night, William Ballinger was not one of the 9. He was able to escape but died of an embolism after reaching the surface, he was lost with the Tang and is now on Eternal Patrol in the Formosa Strait near Turnabout Island.
He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star with Gold Star and the Purple Heart.
Sailor rest our oar.
Note: Body lost at sea.
