Grandma was born in 1901 in Canonsburg, PA, a daughter of Charles Edgar and Martha Louella (Skiles) Fife. She had two brothers, Raymond & Selwyn, and three sisters, Genieve, Velma & Florence. In 1926, she and my grandfather, Charles William Atkinson, were married at the First Methodist Church in Canonsburg. They had five children, Elizabeth, Louise, David, Charlotte & Jim.
I remember Grandma as a light-hearted person. My favorite memory of her is from a time she and I were washing dishes together. I must have been about 7 or 8 years old and I bunched the dishrag into a ball to squeeze the water out of it. Grandma took it out of my hands and demonstrated the proper way to wring a dishrag, laughing as she added, "You were trying to do it like a MAN. They THINK they're strong enough to squeeze the water out like that." I've always thought her advice told me a lot about her. I think people in our family get their sense of humor from Grandma!
Grandma and Pappap celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June 1976. By the next summer, she had died of bone cancer. I'll always miss her!
