Lewis/Louis Knab was born on March 27, 1841, in Rittershoffen, Alsace, Bas-Rhin, France, the third child of Johann Georg and Carolina (Goetzmann) Knab. His siblings were Georg Heinrich, Ludwig, Jakob, and Carolina. On May 11, 1869, Louis married Magdalena Arbogast in Rittershoffen, and they had one daughter, Magdalena.
About 1872 Lewis immigrated to the United States and settled in Ohio. There is no record that his wife and child ever came to the States. In 1878 Lewis and Magdalena were divorced. When Lewis's estate was probated, it was discovered that he had set up a generous trust fund for baby Magdalena.
On April 9, 1878, Lewis married Mary Yaeger in Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Recovery, Ohio. The family settled on a farm just across the state line in Jay County, Indiana. They later transferred their church membership to St. James Lutheran Church in Salamonia, Indiana.
Seven children were born to the couple: Caroline, Sarah "Sadie" [Bailey], Emma [Myers], Anna [Greaf], and a son and daughter who died in infancy.
Lewis died tragically on August 6, 1892, when a swarm of bees stung the horses pulling his wagon. The team ran off, throwing him from the wagon and breaking his neck.
