Robert Dunlap is the son of John Dunlop and "Nancy" Isobell (Isabel) Colvin (Colville, Colvil). He was born on 3 Mar 1765 in Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Scotland. He came to Pennsylvania just before the revolutionary war and thereafter settled in Augusta Co., VA. He married Margaret Kerr, the daughter of Robert Kerr and Elizabeth Bailey on 1 Nov 1792 in Augusta Co., VA. They had 10 known children together (see details in his wife's bio.)
I purchased a copy of his parents, John and Nancy Dunlop's marriage record in Edinburgh, Scotland and it says they married in Mar 1755 in Campbeltown, Argyleshire, Scotland. I also got records of all of their children I could find, listing the name, date, place and parents on each. They were all born in Campbeltown:
Margaret 25 Jan 1756
John, 25 Jun 1758
James 18 Aug 1760 (settled in TN or KY)
Jane Jenat 17 Dec 1762
ROBERT, 3 Mar 1765 above
Elizabeth 6 Feb 1767
Agnes 13 Mar 1769
Archibald 12 May 1771 (resided Middlebrook, VA)
Robert came with his parents and siblings through Pennsylvania before settling in Virginia. He is said to have served in the Revolutionary War, so it must have been towards the end, due to his age. The war began in Apr 1775, when he was 10 and ended Sept 1783, when he was 18 1/2. He is in the old D.A.R. Patriot Index. I've never found documentation of where exactly he served in "PA." He permanently settled in the Summerdean Township in Augusta County, Virginia. It's SW of Staunton and West of Rt 252, AKA Middlebrook Road.
While at New Register House in Edinburgh in the summer of 1992, I ordered a copy of Robert's birth record and waited for its arrival. It says: "Extract of an entry in an Old Parochial Register in the Parish of Campbeltown in the County of Argyll, from the Register of Births and Baptisms: March 1765: Robert; John Dunlop and Isabel Colvin had a son born the 3d and baptised the 7th March called Robert." Family records passed down in the family called his Campbeltown born mother "Isobell" or 'Isobel," Nancy Colvin instead. I also note the use of Colvin, and not Colvill or Colville. In the same year, 1765, Great Britain enacted the notorious Stamp Act levying taxes on our 13 colonies, without proper representation.
Many family records and a family bible state he was born 14th Feb 1765, which I assume is based on using the age on his stone (Aged 82 Years, 1 Month and 13 Days). The Works Progress Administration's Historical Inventory of Shemariah says he was 82 yr, 1 mo & 23 (sic) days instead. The newly cleaned gravestone is easily readable now thanks to a very hard working and dedicated church volunteer angel. Regardless, I think the Scottish birth register above is more accurate. It appears the Gregorian Calendar was officially adopted in Scotland in either 1600 or 1752, so it should have had no bearing.
I shared with Jerry Dunlap, a scan of Robert's birth record (to correct the previously recorded 14 Mar 1765), plus names and dates of his siblings, his mother, her parents, etc. that I found in the original records at New Register House in 1992. See www.mydunlap.net/Main4.html. Jerry's line is through Robert's brother Archibald Dunlap, also residing in Middlebrook, Augusta County, Virginia.
John Dunlap and his wife Nancy Colvin had 5 sons and 2 daughters, all from Campbeltown, Argyleshire, Scotland. They emigrated to America in 1775, settling in "Chambersburg, PA." Two of the Dunlap sons settled in TN and KY and the other 3 John, Archibald and Robert all settled in Riverheads on the headwaters of Middle River, Augusta Co., VA. John, a bachelor, lived with brother Robert until he was 80. Robert married Margaret Kerr, also of Summerdean. This source includes more data on their kids, etc. The Historical Atlas, Augusta County, Virginia, by Joseph A Waddell and Jed Hotchkiss, 1885, Chicago, The Kerr and Dunlap Families, p 45.

He served in the Revolutionary War and resided in Summerdean, VA. The House of Dunlap, by Rev. Jas A.M. Hanna, 1956, Edward Brothers, MI, p 73 and gives data on more generations.

A DIFFERENT Robert (& Elizabeth) Dunlap purchased 188 acres in Augusta Co. in 1742 or 23 years before our Robert was born. It is not believed that they were related, but certainly undocumented (DNA could help).
Only a William Dunlap is listed on J.R. Hildebrand's Map of the Beverley Patent 1736 with original grantees through 1815. He purchased 100 acres either 1740 or 28 Feb 1749.71
