John Phillip Nissen opened Nissen Wagon Works in 1834. The company was one of the most successful wagon makers through the Civil War. Eventually the company was turned over to two of John's son's, William and George. Another son, John Isreal, opened a wagon company and the two companies merged in 1910. John Phillip Nissen and his wife had twelve children, John, William, George, Martha, Harriett, Christian, Mary, Reuben, Samuel, Alice, Jane, and Louis.
The factory that was Nissen Wagon Works from 1834- 1925 remains standing in Forsyth County, North Carolina. The building still contains one of the last remaining star shaped smoke stacks.
