As a result of the marriage of Tommasenna Rush and Fermin S. Archer Sr., Fermin Simon Archer Jr. known in NYPD as (Sonny) was born November 18, 1962 in Brooklyn, New York. Sonny was raised by his father, born in Panama and his grandparents, both borned in Costa Rica.

They were all afraid of losing Sonny to the streets of New York so they prayed a lot and paid close attention to his schedule, and peer group activities. His Dad decided to enroll him into the New York Military Academy where he attended for five years. This experience gave Sonny an improve focus, discipline, respect and order, which could be seen in all of his activities later in his life.

He graduated from Amityville High School in June 1980. For several years he worked as a School Safety Officer for the New York City Board of Education. He joined the New York City Police Department, Transit Division in 1986. Some of his assignments were as follow:

1986 – 1988 assigned to Transit District #2;
1988 – 1990 assigned to NYC Transit Police Task Force/ Decoy;
1990 – 1993 assigned to NYC Transit Police Com… / Robbery Unit;
1993 – 1994 assigned to the Police Commissioners Investigation SQD.
1994 – 1997 assigned to the Cold Case Homicide SQD.
1997 – 2000 assigned to the Deputy Commissioner of Operations
2000 – 2001 assigned to the Police Commissioners Office.
2002 – End of tour: July 13, 2011 1845 Hours Sonny was assigned to the regional U. S. Marshall Task Force, where he specialized in tracking down and apprehending violent fugitives. Over the years he rose through the ranks and on December 20, 2000 he was promoted to Detective First Grade.

Detective Archer was a protégé of the late NYPD Deputy Commissioner Jack Maple.

Fermin is survived by his wife Amanda Archer and four children, Orlanzo, Fermin III known as Mike, Tiffany and Angel. He is also survived by his father Fermin Sr., his stepmother Dammeris, a stepsister Damjocef, an Aunt Joyce, many cousins and other relatives.



Detective Fermin "Sonny" Archer died from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident while on duty.

He had gone home after the accident and then went to North Shore Hospital when he began to not feel well. It was discovered that he suffered a torn aorta and was admitted to the hospital, where he remained until passing away on July 14th.

Detective Archer has served with the New York City Police Department for 28 years, joining New York City Transit Authority Police Department in 1994 before it merged with NYPD. He was assigned to the Warrant Division where he worked with the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force.
