Two off-duty police officers from Southern California were killed when the small plane they were flying crashed during takeoff in Arizona over the weekend, authorities said Monday.
Brian Hayes, 35, and Nicole Anderson, 32, were killed in the crash at Winslow-Lindbergh Regional Airport in Winslow, Ariz., Sunday morning. Hayes was a police officer in Anaheim. Anderson, his girlfriend, was an officer with the Simi Valley Police Department.
They were flying a single-engine, fixed-wing Mooney M20F airplane, which crashed during takeoff and rolled over.
Hayes had been a police Explorer and reserve officer before being hired full time by Anaheim in 1999. He was working patrol at the time of his death, according to a department statement.
Anderson had worked for the Simi Valley Police Department since 2003. During her career, she'd worked on the department's crisis negotiation team and been a bicycle officer. Most recently, she'd been the department's youth services officer, according to a Simi Valley police statement. She was given the department's Meritorious Service Award in 2008 for her role in transitioning the department to paperless report writing, a massive project that required a year to implement.
Nicole Anderson age 32 died July 17, 2011 in an aircraft accident in Winslow, Arizona.
She was born on August 30, 1978 in Glendale, Ca and lived most of her life in La Crescenta, Ca. Nicole attended La Crescenta Grammar School, Rosemont Middle School and graduated from Crescenta Valley High School in 1996. In 2000 she obtained an Associates degree at Glendale Community College and then earned a bachelor's degree at Cal State L.A. in 2003. Nicole joined the Simi Valley Police Department in November of 2003 and remained there until her untimely passing.
Her many interests include traveling, snow skiing, boating and riding her bicycle. She loved to be with her family and loved her work family too. All of whom will miss her to no end.
Nicole is survived by her mother Michele Anderson of Montrose, Ca; father Alan Anderson (Sabrina) of Monument, Co; grandparents Bob and Bea Berryman of La Crescenta, Ca; Great grandparent Gilbert Cendejas of Montrose, Ca and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Everyone who knew her will dearly miss her warm smile, her energy and her sense of humor.
She went to work every day knowing her life was on the line so some time ago she prepared a sentiment for those she may leave behind one day. It says "I loved my family very much. I was honored to have a career in law enforcement and work with the best. Don't be sad I am gone. Be happy about and remember the time we spent together."
A memorial service will be held in Nicole's honor Tuesday July 26, 2011 10:30 a.m. at the Simi Covenant Church in Simi Valley, Ca. Assistance with the service arrangements has been entrusted to Reardon Simi Valley Funeral Home.
